Amethyst Meaning, Healing Properties, and How I Use it in Real Life
Okay. You asked me about amethyst. So I’m going to answer you the way I would if we were sitting at my kitchen table and you were holding one in your hand.
First, the basics. Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz, and its color comes from trace amounts of iron in the crystal structure that were altered by natural radiation within the Earth’s crust. It most commonly forms inside basalt geodes — hollow, gas-formed cavities in volcanic lava that later fill with silica-rich fluids and grow crystals. Brazilian amethyst geodes are famous for their tall, cathedral-like crystal growth, while Uruguayan geodes tend to be more rounded and often display a deeper, richer purple color.
That’s the geology in a nutshell.
Now let’s talk about why I actually keep this stone around.

What Amethyst Feels Like (To Me)
When my brain is loud (and I mean messy), amethyst smoothes the static. It doesn’t sedate me. It doesn’t dull me. It organizes me, and helps me make sense of the chaos.
It’s like someone took all the open tabs in my mental browser (yes, I literally have 19 open tabs in Chrome right now) and said, “We’re going to close the eighteen that don’t matter.”
Amethyst has long been associated with calm, clarity, moderation, and spiritual awareness. It’s connected to the crown chakra and the third eye, so it’s often used for meditation and intuitive work. But I also find it grounds gently through the heart when I wear it as jewelry.
Earrings are fantastic for this stone because they sit closer to the crown and third eye...and really accentuate just how pretty you are too. Win. Win. And you are pretty. Yes. I'm talking to YOU.
A pendant works beautifully too. And if you like spheres (you know I do), they radiate energy evenly in all directions instead of focusing it like a point, which is especially convenient for those of us who seem to always be upside-down and backwards.

About That “Prevents Drunkenness” Thing
The ancient Greeks believed amethyst made you immune to intoxication. The word “amethystos” literally means “not drunk.”
Let me just say this clearly:
IT DOES NOT.
Please do not call me the next morning when you wake up with a Sharpie mustache, one shoe missing, and your car parked artistically in Mrs. Henderson’s flower bed because you decided to “test the ancients.”
I warned you.
What it does help with is moderation. And clarity. Which, frankly, might have prevented the flower bed incident in the first place.

Traditional Uses
Throughout history, amethyst has been associated with:
- Calming racing thoughts
- Encouraging patience and perspective
- Supporting meditation
- Helping with overthinking
- Easing tension before sleep
I am not making any medical claims. These are just traditional associations and my personal experience. When my head feels like it’s running a marathon without my consent, amethyst helps me step back and breathe.

How I Use It
Sometimes I hold a small sphere during meditation. Sometimes I use a point on my crown chakra and third eye. Sometimes I wear it. Sometimes I sleep with it. Sometimes it just sits on my desk while I work, and that’s enough.
It’s not ostentatious. It’s steady.
And sometimes steady is exactly what you need.

More amethyst jewelry is on the way.
And if you do decide to test the Greek booze theory… don’t say I didn’t warn you.
