Red Phantom Quartz and the Important Work of Grounding

Earth energy, Embodiment, and Making Peace with the Darker Layers of Self

Red phantom quartz is a variety of quartz that contains internal “phantoms” dusted with red iron minerals, most commonly hematite, but sometimes goethite. These iron-rich coatings outline earlier stages of the crystal’s growth, creating visible layers or ghost-like shapes suspended inside the crystal.

You may also see this material referred to as eisenkiesel, ferruginous quartz, harlequin quartz, or hematoid quartz, all names that describe the presence of iron or hematite within the crystal.

How do Phantoms Form Inside of Quartz?

Inside a phantom crystal, the inner crystal formed first. Growth then paused as environmental conditions changed, allowing minerals to settle onto its surface. When growth resumed, those minerals became trapped inside, preserving the outline of earlier stages of formation. Because of this, phantom crystals are powerful tools for self-understanding. They make it easier to see and work with different layers of personal development, rather than viewing growth as a single, linear process.

Sometimes red phantom or hematoid quartz is also sold under the name “Fire Quartz.” This is a relatively recent marketing term that I personally find inaccurate. Hematite and iron are Earth-energy minerals, not fire energy. Calling these stones “fire” suggests heat, intensity, or stimulation, which doesn’t match how they actually behave energetically. In my experience, these are grounding, cooling, stabilizing stones and are often especially helpful for people who tend to run hot, overly yang, or prone to inflammation.

Sometimes “Fire Quartz” is used to describe lepidocrocite quartz, which is already widely known as strawberry quartz. While lepidocrocite can work with multiple elements, it still leans most strongly toward Earth and Air. Creating new names for stones that already have established identities, especially when the new name misrepresents the stone’s nature, tends to create more confusion than clarity.

Red phantom quartz adds the grounding energy of hematite to the purifying and amplifying powers of quartz crystal, and is used extensively in healing and meditation. This crystal helps you drop into a deeper meditative state. It stimulates the intellect, intuition, and creativity. Red phantom quartz can be used with any of the chakras, but it’s especially strong with the lower chakras (root, sacral, and solar plexus) because of its connection with the Earth. It grounds by drawing Earth energy in through the lower chakras and moving it up into the upper chakras.

Red phantom quartz is helpful when you’re trying to become more tuned into your physical body and its needs. It encourages balance with the creature comforts (food, warmth, sleep, exercise), and it helps you integrate those aspects of life into your developing self. Red phantom quartz stimulates the appetite for the kind of nutrition your body is actually asking for. It has been used to stimulate circulation, it supports sensuality, and helps quiet an overactive mind, bringing more serenity and comfort when life feels chaotic.

Like other varieties of phantom crystals, red phantom quartz helps reunite you with the darker and hidden aspects of your personality. When there is a green chlorite dusting on the red phantom, I find it adds an overall “yes” to the work, inspiring a more positive outlook and nudging you toward real, practical change.

Quartz with Hedenbergite from Inner Mongolia–Green Angel Dreamstone

Green Angel Dreamstone from Inner Mongolia

I’m so excited to show you one of my green quartz crystals from the Huanggang Mine of Inner Mongolia, China.    I’ve managed to acquire a small collection of these crystals, and am parting with this one in DoodlepunkArt. (Sorry. This one sold, but I have a pendant here.)  I’m trying to resist the urge to hoard them all to myself.

This specimen is quartz with hedenbergite inclusions.  It is very similar to the Seriphos green quartz from Greece, only it is much larger than the crystals found at that location, and the energy and appearance of these crystals is unique.  This crystal also goes by these names: prase, prasem, and Robert Simmons has named them quite appropriately, “Green Angel Dreamstone.”

These are not the same as dream quartz, which is colored green by epidote.  Hedenbergite is the mineral that tints this Inner Mongolian quartz an earthy green color.  It also may be part of what caused the crystals to grow in such an unusual and spectacular way:  The sides of these crystals are covered with hundreds of small, cathedral-like, rhombohedral faces.

Many of the quartz crystals from this location have a multi-sceptered appearance due to a dipyramidal habit.  These dipyramidal crystals are missing their m-faces, so they are essentially two terminations (or six-sided pyramids) attached to each other.  (“M-faces” are the straight sides of a quartz crystal that lead to the termination.)  Hundreds of dipyramids line the m-faces of the main crystals on many of these stones.

I have not identified all of the minerals in this particular specimen, but there are at least three other minerals: a yellow one, a silvery black one and a white one.  Here is a list of minerals that have been accurately identified on these crystals by the pros:

• Arsenopyrite
• Calcite

• Hedenbergite
• Helvine
• Ilvaite
• Lollingite
• Magnetite
• Molybdenite
• Sheelite

I showed these crystals to a very knowledgeable rockhound friend of mine, Brittany Burkhardt, who also identified zeolites, apophyllite and stilbite on some of these crystals.  She thought what I had identified as calcite was albite, but I performed a scratch test.  It is softer than fluorite, so it is definitely not albite, and calcite is consistent with what we know about the mine location.  I have verified that stilbite and apophyllite are correctly identified on those specimens as well.

These crystals come from the Huanggang Mine, Hexigten Banner (Keshiketeng Co.), Ulanhad League (Chifeng Prefecture), Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China.  This mine area covers 22 square kilometers, and there are 185 different mineral lodes.  Mostly ores have come from this very prolific mine, but when I got these, some truly spectacular quartz specimens were released onto the market.  I have seen the more flawless specimens go for many thousands of dollars.  (I have attached fresh links of specimens currently for sale at various shops at the bottom and tried to keep away from the ones that were $6000 or more; there are a few economical options as well.)  I found a great report on the mine location, complete with geological information, history and photos of the mines, miners and some of the minerals found there: http://www.chinesefineminerals.com/huanggang.htm   (Update 2/9/26: Sorry, I couldn't get their site to open, but I kept it here in hopes they get the blog back up and running some day. Metaphysically, these crystals have a peaceful and comforting energy.  They feel very protective and calming.  This is a stone for profound inner and spiritual exploration.  These crystals make you spiritually more open, perceptive, sensitive and allowing.  They help you let go of your control during spiritual journeys so you can be more open to whatever adventure is about to happen.  You can either sleep with or meditate with them to help with astral travel.  It is the perfect companion stone for anyone learning the art of lucid dreaming.

Our conscious and material reality is greatly influenced by our unconscious reality, which includes dreams, thoughts, feelings and mental images.  By becoming aware of and learning to master the unconscious reality we can learn to influence and manifest what we want in our conscious and material reality.  In this way, this is a manifestation stone, but instead of acting through the center of our will (at the solar plexus chakra), like citrine, green angel dreamstone acts through heart energy (located on the physical body at the heart chakra).  This stone is not only a great tool for tapping into and directing the unconscious, it is also a great tool for healing the heart chakra and expanding heart energy, which is also an important manifestation tool.

A Truly Unusual Crystal Habit

The heart chakra (or Anahata) is associated with the inner child, actions of the hand, and the ability to make decisions that are directed (or in alignment with) the Higher-Self (aka. Higher-Power, Universe, Source, God, Spirit – whatever terminology works best for you), as opposed to making decisions with the mind that are greatly influenced by emotions, judgments, desires, fate and karma.  The heart chakra is also the center for compassion and unconditional love – not simply romantic love, but love of life and everything in general that is Heart Energy.  It is the love that finds great joy in the sound of rain or the smell of fir needles warming in the sun.

Heart energy is a very high vibration that takes love beyond the physical love we are more familiar with, and turns it into something very profound that has the power to affect the world around you at a quantum level.  This is the heart of “The Secret.”  Heart energy is the manifestation tool used by quantum activists.  Manifestation through heart energy happens through use of the Law of Attraction by becoming aligned with the Higher-Self.  Alignment with the Higher-Self requires one to let go of control (control that is by the physical or material self, who is in turn controlled by desires, emotions, fate and karma).  It involves allowing heart energy to expand outwards into the world around you.

So it isn’t just its ability to help the user understand and alter the inner-self and subconscious that makes this a manifestation stone.  By healing the heart, supporting and enhancing heart energy (universal love), and making one more aligned with the Higher-Self, it helps one make use of the law of attraction to alter the course of physical/material life.

Quartz with Montmorillonite

Recently I came across some amazing new quartz specimens for my collection.  I will be using them to make pendants in the next few months.  Some of these items are extremely rare, so rare that many of the inclusions are still alluding me at this point.  I am going to show you a series of photos of my quartz with montmorillonite.  Try a search on google for quartz with montmorillonite and see how many images you can find.  It's not very many.

These photos are of my quartz crystals with iridescent pink montmorillonite.  There are other minerals in these stones as well.  Perhaps mica is one of them.  The image I received from my supplier showed some very dirty, odd looking crystals.  I took a chance because I just had a hunch that underneath all of that mud, something spectacular was hiding, and I was right.

These stones practically glow.  I have never seen anything like these before and it took quite a bit of research to figure out that the pink pearly mineral is most likely montmorillonite, which is a type of clay.  There is montmorillonite in bentonite clay. People have used montmorillonite for healing for centuries.

This one has a coarse pink powdery clay that has been falling out of the hole you see on top.  It is especially interesting because while inside the crystal it looks very opalescent, but the dust just looks like pink dirt on the outside.

I am so excited to work with these and hope they can handle the heat because these things are truly a spectacular find.  I think I'm going to use my new design to limit the amount of heat exposed to the stone.  The following is an example of how I am probably going to hang these.
